I just keep coming back to these, mesmerized by the tonage (spelling?) of ice here. Part of me wonders about the ecosystem, the fish, the wildlife, how they were affected during this meltdown and how fast their 'homes' shifted.

As you said, though, luckily no one was hurt! It's still pretty awe-inspiring.
 

That much ice scares me. Not as much as the thought of driving over that much ice, but still.
 

Lyn, actually I asked about the fish. I was imagining a gazillion wee fishies being pulverized by the grinding ice... according to some biologists neighbours. This ice jam will ultimately be nothing but good for the river, clearing away years of built up debris from the shores and riverbed. They expect that this season will be one of the best for fish life.

Doug, the ice road is incredibly safe to drive on. Dry ice (and at our winter temperatures it's very like dry ice) is sticky. The only times you have problems is with heavy load trucks. Sometimes they can create a pressure wave in front of them and fracture the ice... very dangerous, but it rarely happens anymore as our understanding of ice thickness vs weight vs speed increases. But just to drive a regular vehicle... it's no problem at all.

I'll try to remember to take a picture of the ice road next winter.
